Celebrate Socktober at the October 9 Bout!

October 5, 2016

In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, when Dumbledore looks into the Mirror of Erised, his greatest desire is a pair of socks. For many in need at area shelters, a pair of socks is also highly desired. Socks are one of the most needed items at shelters, but they are often one of the least donated. There is way you can help—while enjoying a great game of roller on Sunday, October 9!

Diagon Valley, the Miami Valley’s chapter of the Harry Potter Alliance, is sponsoring a Socktober Sock Drive. To participate, bring new socks to the October 9 game at Orbit Fun Center. In exchange for a package of new socks (minimum 4 pairs in the package), you’ll receive a coupon for 10% off your purchase at the Merch Booth. This is extra exciting because Gem City Roller Derby is debuting new team merchandise at the game—and you will get the hot new items for 10% off in exchange for your donation to Diagon Valley!

The Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) is an international organization that turns fans into heroes by doing social justice and community service work through the lens of various fandoms. Diagon Valley is a local chapter, and their goal is to impact the local community while still contributing to the larger social projects of the HPA. Other projects include Accio Books, a yearly book drive for those in need, and Wizard Rock the Vote, a voter registration campaign. If you haven’t registered to vote yet, don’t worry! Diagon Valley will have voter registration forms at the game as well.

More information on the HPA can be found at or by following Diagon Valley on social media [, @DiagonValleyOH (Twitter), or @DiagonValleyOhio (Instagram)].
