Weekend-O-Derby Fun

February 10, 2017

Ugh, February. Am I right? Thank goodness we’ve got roller derby to carry us through ‘til spring.

And this weekend promises lots of juicy derby goodness with a double-header away game in Ft. Wayne, Indiana on Saturday, February 11 followed by a rec team bout in Dayton on Sunday, February 12 as Murder Squad takes on Snark Attack.

Gem City Roller Derby kicks off their 2017 competitive season with two away bouts against the Fort Wayne Derby Girls. Both the Purple Reign and the Violet Femmes will take on their respective competitors. As Gem City’s WFTDA competitive team, the Purple Reign has been training hard for the upcoming season, preparing to climb further up the WFTDA rankings. They’re playing tight and hitting hard, so Saturday’s bout against Ft. Wayne promises to be an excellent match well worth the drive from Dayton. Gem City comes in as the slight underdog, currently ranked at #105 against Fort Wayne currently ranked #102, but the close ranking differential should lead to an exciting and competitive bout.

The Violet Femmes have their own exciting twist for Saturday. Several Gems will make their roster debuts, proudly sporting their white Femmes jerseys this weekend for the first time.

Turbulent Flo #88 has been working towards this moment for over a year. Her biggest challenge?

“Putting all the pieces together,” she says. “It’s like taking all these little things that make sense and then trying to put them all together. It’s so much stuff happening all at once.”

“I think there are people who have been on the team for, like, years that are still putting stuff together,” says an encouraging Honey Basher # 49 who has been skating with the Gems for less than a year.

Turbulent Flo and Honey Basher will be joined by Miss Demeanor #007, Blitzkrieg Becks #1974,  Strawberry ShortQuake #400, MegaBytes #512, Shake Up! #281, and yours truly, Wednesday Splat'ems #23, all skating as Femmes for the first time.

“It’s gonna be awesome,” says Blitzkrieg Becks, who plans on scoring some points as a jammer this weekend.

Just because the Violet Femmes are full of fresh skaters doesn’t mean they’re not set to kick a little booty. These skaters have been training hard alongside the Reign, not to mention an impressive group of brand new recruits who are well on their way to competitive play themselves.

And speaking of the newer skaters, many fresh Gems can be seen at the second to last rec team bout for the season this Sunday when Murder Squad plays Snark Attack. GCRD’s first-ever rec team season has been a great success, and we’re grateful for everyone who has come out to say hello and catch a game! Don’t miss out on one of the last opportunities to be a part of this rec season. There are some seriously impressive up-and-coming Gems that you won’t want to miss.

Saturday’s double-header takes place at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Doors open at 5 p.m. The headlining bout begins at 6 p.m. as the Reign go up against the Bomb Squad. At 7:30 p.m. you can catch the Femmes as they compete against the Swat Team. Tickets are $12 and include both bouts.

The Murder Squad vs. Snark Attack bout is Sunday, February 12 at Orbit Fun Center. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the first whistle is at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door.

We can’t wait to see you there!
